Improving Community Safety: New Security Cameras for Milford Highlands

The Milford Highlands Property Owners Association Board is pleased to share another important community improvement initiative — the installation of security cameras at key access and strategic locations within Milford Highlands.

The project is part of the Board’s broader effort to improve community safety, discourage unauthorized activity, and better protect our shared property and infrastructure.

Why Security Cameras?

During our initial Board discussions, concerns were raised regarding activities such as unauthorized dumping, trespassing, vandalism, and other inappropriate activity within the community.

Because Milford Highlands does not have electrical power or traditional internet connectivity available at many of the locations where cameras would be most useful, installing a conventional wired security system was not a practical solution.

The Board therefore began researching camera systems specifically suited to our community’s environment.

Designed for Our Community

The Board evaluated solar-powered security cameras with remote connectivity, allowing cameras to operate in locations where conventional electricity and Wi-Fi are not readily available.

Important capabilities considered during the evaluation included:

  • Solar-powered operation.
  • Remote connectivity.
  • Night-vision capability.
  • Recording and storage capabilities.
  • Remote monitoring.
  • Outdoor/weather-resistant operation.
  • Strategic placement without requiring major infrastructure.

Rather than immediately installing a large number of cameras, the Board chose a phased approach — beginning with a limited number at the locations where they can provide the greatest benefit.

Strategic Locations

The initial camera deployment focuses on the main community access area and other important locations/intersections within Milford Highlands.

Camera placement was evaluated carefully, taking into consideration visibility, connectivity, installation requirements, snow removal, surrounding properties, and the ability to effectively monitor important community access points.

The objective is not simply to install cameras, but to place them where they can provide meaningful value to the community.

From Planning to Installation

This initiative began during the Board’s first meetings as a community-safety idea.

Over the following months, the Board researched equipment, evaluated solar and connectivity requirements, considered potential mounting locations, reviewed installation needs, and determined an appropriate initial deployment.

The cameras were subsequently purchased, and the project advanced into installation.

This represents another example of the Board moving an identified community need through the full process of:

Identify → Research → Evaluate → Approve → Implement

A Deterrent and an Additional Community Resource

The primary purpose of the system is deterrence and community protection.

Visible cameras at important access points can discourage unauthorized dumping, vandalism, and other inappropriate activities. When an incident does occur, recorded information may also provide useful information for understanding what happened.

The system also gives the Association another tool to help protect community property and infrastructure.

Starting Smart and Evaluating Results

The Board intentionally chose to begin with a limited deployment rather than installing cameras throughout the entire community at once.

Once the initial cameras have been operating for a period of time, the Board can evaluate their effectiveness and determine whether additional locations would provide meaningful benefits.

This allows the Association to make future decisions based on actual community needs and real-world performance.

Continuing to Improve Milford Highlands

The security-camera project, together with our recently completed road improvements, reflects the Board’s commitment to making practical and visible improvements throughout Milford Highlands.

Our focus is to responsibly use Association resources, address longstanding community needs, and establish better systems for maintaining and protecting our shared community.

We appreciate the continued support and cooperation of Milford Highlands homeowners as these improvements move forward.

Together, we are building a safer, better-maintained, and stronger Milford Highlands community.
